Marble Falls youth football has success on opening weekend

Teams of Marble Falls Youth Football and Cheer enjoyed a successful opening weekend of the 2023 season Aug. 26.

The Marble Falls sixth-graders defeated Llano 21-7. The Marble Falls freshman gold team beat the Liberty Hill freshmen 13-6, and the Marble Falls junior varsity gold squad defeated the Marble Falls junior varsity purple squad 26-7. The Canyon Lake freshmen beat the Marble Falls freshman purple team 24-18, and San Saba fifth and sixth grade slipped by the Marble Falls fifth-graders 7-6. Games were played at Mustang Stadium at Marble Falls High School and association president Nicholas Wood said everyone appreciated the use.

Wood also coaches the fifth-graders.

“We had dominated the whole game,” he said of the San Saba loss. “We were inside the red zone on fourth and long, and we decided to throw it. We missed the block, and they came through. There was a fumble, and it got returned for a touchdown. They kicked the extra point and made it. We have four kids over a hundred pounds, they had 14 kids over a hundred pounds. It was great for our kids. It puts them in a really good position. We can play with kids who are significantly bigger.”

San Saba isn’t in the same division as Marble Falls.

Wood noted the game between the two Marble Falls freshman teams illustrated how well the players know each other.

“It was back and forth, back and forth,” he said. “They started on their 30-yard line and got stopped on the 17-yard line.”

The president said the sixth-graders looked solid against Llano.

“The sixth-graders handled Llano pretty good,” he said. “It was a great weekend of competitive football.”

At the forefront of each game and practice, Wood said, is ensuring the players are having fun.

“That’s the first thing,” he said. “Part of the fun is winning and getting the kids to be aggressive every game. The kids were playing physical and playing significantly larger teams. It’s always competitive. And we’ll split teams up so kids can get more playing time. Our kids were aggressive the entire time. It was super exciting to watch them get out there. That leads to more aggressive play over the long term. That will be more beneficial. “

The teams will return to play Saturday, Sept. 9, when they travel to Jarrell. Some Marble Falls teams will play Lago Vista, while the other half will face Jarrell. The reason for teams from three different cities is to maximize officiating crews.
